Program News
WELCOME BACK STUDENTS! Welcome to the 2009-2010 academic year! Talent Search workshops for all current participants will be starting in October, so be sure to listen for announcements or see your school counselor for meeting dates and times. At the first workshop, you will receive a calendar of all of the meeting dates for the year. You are REALLY going to enjoy the exciting workshops and activities that are planned.
We, the Talent Search staff, are looking forward to seeing you and supporting you in reaching your college goals. In the meantime, please let us know if we can help you in any way. Otherwise, see you at the first meeting!
College Road Trip 2009 This summer 2009, Talent Search offered three “College Road Trips.” The trips provided rising 10th - 12th grade Talent Search participants the opportunity to see a number of colleges and universities in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. Arkansas colleges included Ouachita Baptist, Henderson State, University of Central Arkansas, Hendrix and Arkansas Tech. The Oklahoma road trip included Oklahoma State Okmulgee, University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City University and Oklahoma State University. Those participating in the Missouri trip received tours of Kansas City Art Institute and University of Missouri, Kansas City. It was a great time for all who attended. Spring Campus Visits! Campus visits to area colleges and universities were scheduled for all 9-12th grade participants this past Spring 2009. Be sure to watch for permission slips and more information on Campus Day which will be held at the University of Arkansas this 2009-10 academic year! UB Lending Library Some students have shown interest in reading books that are not included in their regular school curricula. As a result, Upward Bound has decided to put together a lending library of books we recommend students should read for their own edification. The library consists of mainly classics in literature, such as Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis and James Baldwin's Notes of a Native Son, but also includes contemporary novels such as Caleb Carr's The Alienist and Rebecca Wells' Divine Secrets of the Ya-ya Sisterhood. We hope students will check out these books and learn or continue to enjoy reading simply for the sake of reading. Program Updates! Congratulations to all 2009 graduating seniors. We will be eager to hear about your transition to college when we follow-up in the fall. Expect a call from us in September. New Student Enrollment New student recruitment for the 2009-10 academic year will begin September 1. Online applications will be available at that time. Current participants will not need to reapply. Monthly workshops for enrolled Talent Search participants will begin in October and continue through April 2010. If you are moving from middle school to junior high, or junior high to high school, counselors will see you at your new school.
